what a week…

shakey, shakey…we had a hell of a week here this week. owen got to experience his first earthquake. i was at work at the time and everything started rocking back and forth. it lasted for quite a while too — 30 or so seconds, at least it felt that way. it had nothing on the northridge quake however long ago, but it was the first ‘major’ quake since owen’s been around. made me realize though, at 8 or so pm at night, that i was in a building made out predominantly of glass. i had all these images of the glass in all the windows, conference room, cubicles, etc. all blowing out at once and then it being that scene from die hard where bruce willis is running around the hotel, barefoot, in the shattered glass.

then there is the fact that owen’s vocabulary is racing along in its development. for some reason, he started saying bus (’buh’) and light (’lie’). since my mother was visiting, he also picked-up nana (’nay-na’ or ‘lala’). kara got a new laptop and its screensaver is a bunch of bubbles, which actually sounds like ‘bubbles’. but, by far, the best right now is when he says papa (’buh-ba’).

since mom was in town, kara got a head-start on the kitchen remodel. it is a ton of work though. her and michael are clearing out the main dining room and we’ve ordered all the cabinets. this is the last major remodel i think we need to complete to really have a near-finished house. after that, it’s just the front yard… but worse case is that we throw some gravel down and call it done. it’s odd, we moved into this house almost 10 years ago and it seems like the work never stops…

yargh! here be my treasure.

finally, owen went trick or treating this week. was pretty awesome. there’s this pirate store in san francisco that kara and my mother took him to. well, the store is actually a writing workshop, but it’s a long story… the guy that runs it should be considered a hero, not a weird-o. donate if you can.

while they were there, some folks from found magazine took some photos of the little man and then asked us to email more to him. cops on the street got a kick out of him… it was all good fun. that night, we went to belvedere street in cole valley. owen fell asleep on the way there, and since he wakes up like kara, which is to say, sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow, he didn’t do much trick or treating… but it was still cute as hell.

he actually says ‘argh!’ to try and scare people. we have to teach him now that halloween is over…

photos updated. i promise i’ll update the videos soon…
