do something important!

hey there. i just went and bought this. well, i bought two. one goes to a child in a developing nation and one comes to us. you can only do this for a limited time, and i really do think it is noble what the olpc organization is trying to do. olpc = one laptop per child. it was built on the premise that kids and people in developing nations should be given access to technology like everyone else.
and it really is a piece of wonder — this little laptop. it has no moving parts, an incredibly long battery life, is virtually silent and can withstand temperatures over 120 degrees as well as being dust-proof and water-resistant. it has a built in operating system, a web camera and microphone and wireless access.
for 400 bucks, you can get one for yourself and have one sent to someone in an underprivileged nation. the give one get one campaign ends on the 26th — after which point (the n.y. times is reporting) they will not be sold in industrialized nations.
read reviews of the hardware at the new york times, laptop.com and this other blog site.
i say go do it. you’re helping someone, somewhere. i’m saving the one i’m getting for owen. it’ll be perfect for him.

I would agree. I’ve been sold on the olpc concept since first reading about it last year. Given the opportunity to get a machine for a child somewhere and get one for our unborn child…I couldn’t pass that up.
