the kindness of strangers…

so… this is rad. this is inspiring. this reminds me that the world is full of good people.

so, we’re out in austin. owen has been waking up at aout 6:45 or 7am every day. which is all fine and good, but this morning we ran out of milk for him, which is, as i am sure most of you can imagine, a scary thought with a pissed baby in a house where sound carries…

not wanting to wake up the house, much less the entire neighborhood, i threw owen into the car and then drove around austin to find some milk for him. i had already ventured to h.e.b. and wanted to find somewhere else to shop. i went to whole foods (the corporate hq, no less). there were a bunch of rather hip folks running around, getting the store ready to open.

so, i walked up to the nearest whole foods worker out front who was organizing oranges (which prompted owen to say “orange”, over and over and over again.) the store wasn’t open yet, i learned, so i asked the guy where i could get some milk in the neighborhood.

so, and this is rad. he escorts me and owen into the store, tells us to stay on the metal grating, as they had just mopped the floors and it’d be a liability if i slipped. he just didn’t want us to “freeze” outside… he then walks to the back of the store, grabs a gallon of milk and walks it back up to me and owen. i tried to give the guy money. he wouldn’t take it, wouldn’t think to take it and just, literally, gave us the gallon of milk.

he told me to tell my friends to shop at whole foods. and, really, go shop there. because he did something he didn’t need to do at all. and then he wouldn’t take anything from me either.

i’m nothing but impressed.

bye.
