friday: the fair
i, of course, had the day off to celebrate our country’s birthday — you know, when we drove the evil english off our shores while we also handed out blankets to the indians. go team! anyway… there’s a fair in marin county that we decided we’d take owen to and then hit the fireworks.
nothing about the fair culture has changed — the food is still the same crap as it ever was, the games are still the same games that exist only to take your money with their impossible promises. it’s like the fair as a concept is stuck in time. it hasn’t advanced one minute from when i was a kid.
we got to the fair to find a line that was an hour long. an hour. and people did that thing where they sidle up next to you and slowly try to pass everyone else in the line. that crap pisses me off.
once inside we took owen to the petting zoo and the animal cages. he got to hang out with a pig. it was pretty rad. the pig weighed like 1100 pounds.
as the sun went down, we had to explain to owen that the sky was going to explode. and go ‘boom!’ we thought he was going to be okay with it… we were sooooooo wrong. after the first firework, he was a screaming mess. we decided it would make sense to get out of there before we traumatized him forever. as we were fleeing the scene, everytime people would cheer, owen would through his sobs, clap his hands and say ‘yaaaaaaaaaaay!’
we then got stuck in the parking lot for an hour and a half trying to get out.
