“a rough night”, confessions of a tired mom

is it normal for a 2 month old not to go poop in 24 hours time?  owen ate and pooped with every feeding.  well, according to the “internets” it’s perfectly normal for a breastfed baby not to have a bowel movement for several days, but it didn’t say anything about the extreme fussiness that goes with it.

dylan is a mellow baby, except when he’s hungry and isn’t being fed and/or hasn’t pooped in 24hrs.  it goes something like this, “aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhgggggggggggggggeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!” followed by red faced, breath holding, head thrashing scream.  have you every heard an infant do that thing with there breath, where they can’t catch it because they’ve been crying so hard, i’ve heard owen do it but never a baby.  all this happens in a matter of seconds.  it’s not like i let him cry for even a minute if it sounds serious.  i’m talking 0 to 60 in 3 seconds.

so yesterday afternoon, after my mom left i kept waiting for dylan’s once a day, outfit change required, blowout poop.  it never came, what did come was a very fussy baby and a toddler that needed his dinner, attention and to be put to bed.  meanwhile i couldn’t put dylan down without the above description happening.  so this is what happened, owen had popcorn, shreaded cheese and milk for dinner.  we skipped his bath and he watched “toy story” on the Xbox, because the TV isn’t working right.  rumor puked in and on my new shoes.  we skipped books because i couldn’t put dylan down long enough to turn a page.  instead i sang 3 verses of “old macdonald” and turned out the lights.  luckily owen was okay with that.  i gave dylan a bath hoping it would calm him and get him ready for bed.  it did but then when i didn’t get him dressed quickly enough the head thrashing little devil came out again.  so i nursed him whiled i dressed him and then put him down around 10pm.  he did sleep until 3am which is pretty good but then was super fussy until 5:30 when he finally fell asleep.  owen then woke up at 6am.  i stepped in cat puke, a different one, on my way to owen’s room.  owen, fortunately let me sleep while he watched elmo in our room.  he was very sweet, rubbing my head like we do to dylan to help him sleep.  dylan finally took a giant blowout the sides, top and front poop at 11am and was quite happy to have done so.  i’ll definitely be asking the dr. about this tomorrow at dylan’s 2 month check up.
