potty training – day 4

just when i was about to give up hope, dylan came running into the bathroom right before bedtime saying “pee pee, pee pee”!  it was the first completely unpromted pee all day.  the entire day he just pee’d his pants and didn’t seem to be bothered in the least that he was sitting in a puddle of pee when he was eating his snack.   gross!

potty training – day 3

humph

ugh! major regression today.  here’s the problem, i think, dylan is so distracted by what owen is doing, that it’s nearly impossible to get him to go to the potty if owen is around.  owen tries to help, but when he does dylan screams “my pee pee” at him, he wants to do it by himself, but when owen leaves dylan wants to follow him just to see what he is doing.  i think our success yesterday was due in large because owen was out with the babysitter all morning and was clearly tired in the afternoon and wasn’t being very interactive and when we went to our playdate last night, owen fell asleep so he wasn’t even a factor.  so basically, dylan is potty trained if owen isn’t around.  i never in a million years would have guessed this would be my problem.  we are sticking to it though, i’ve headed down a one way road it just might take us awhile to get to our destination.

potty training – day 2

today was commando day, actually he’s supposed to go commando for a whole month.  supposedly underwear feels too much like a diaper.  pee’d in his pants this morning 3 times but then no more the rest of the entire day!!!  we are getting there.  i still have to prompt him quite a bit and tell him he can bring what he’s doing with him but we have progress!  we even drove down to burlingame for a dinner time playdate.  yeah!!!

my biggest problem i can see at this point is the “mine” battle over the toilet!  dylan ALWAYS has to go when owen is going, so i’m ALWAYS rushing owen off.  it’s not fair, but it wasn’t fair either when owen was newly potty trained and ALWAYS had to pee right when i started nursing dylan and i drop everything to help him to the bathroom, so it’s literally “tit for tat”.

potty training – day 1

so i decided it was time to fully potty train dylan.  he’s been pooping in the potty consistently for about 6 month’s now and everytime anyone in our house needs to pee, dylan throws a fit whining “pee pee too!!!” over and over again.  we let him “try”, but it was clear that he just didn’t understand or have the control to do it.  so i’m taking this window of interest and urge for self independence to fully potty train him now.  i’m going with the “oh crap! potty training” method, it’s an actual book.  it’s basically a three day naked potty training.  oddly enough even though owen potty trained super easy, i felt like i needed some tips on potty training dylan.

day 1 – i had our babysitter take owen to the discover museum so that dylan wouldn’t be distracted by him.  he did great.  he pee’d on the floor twice but then after that he started telling me before and then he went in the potty.  there’s a VERY funny story that involves being naked, stamps, where he wanted to put his stamps, shrinkage and then “uh oh, where did it go?”  i really, really wanted to take pictures but obviously this wouldn’t be appropriate.  he went down easy for his nap in “special night night only diapers”.  when dylan woke from his nap, owen was already home and the babysitter was gone and dylan pee’d everywhere, more went to the floor than the potty.  but i do think he’s getting the hang of it, it ‘s just so distracting to have a brother around.  we’ll see how tomorrow goes.

OLHR camping trip – big basin 2010

we survived camping with a 5 little boys under the age of four!  actually we had a great time and hope that we’ll continue to do this every year!  i hope everyone had as much fun as we did.

the boys all had a great time. getting dirty, story time in the playtent (thanks aimee) and riding their chosen vehicles.

maybe it was just cooking over the fire or being outside all day but the food was delicious!  marc made a delicious hobo diner and i was quite proud of my hand tossed campfire pizza. here’s to next years camping trip.  cheers!

little plumber

plumber dylan

owen can build it and dylan can plumb it.

little builder

little builder

the other morning, i turned around and owen had built this little village.  i was impressed!  then dylan came over and knocked it over =)

more trains…

train over pass train over pass

train over pass

we’ve been escaping the fog and heading over to the east bay for some sun.  there’s always a good place to catch a train sighting and a little ice cream.  dylan is still obsessed with trains.  owen and i had a little conversation about it:

me talking to owen dylan is crazy about trains

owen yeah, he’s crazy about trains

me what are you crazy about?

owen nothing

the lie

the scene: i’m drying my hair when owen pops his head in the door and asks:

owen “mama, can i have this now?” holding up an orange lolipop

me “no. not right now, maybe after lunch”

a few minutes later, owen pops his head back in and i see a glimmer of sugary drool on his chin.

me “owen, did you have your lolipop?”

owen “no”

i lean over and smell his face.  it’s smells of sweet sugary orange lolipop.

me “yes, you did. where is it?”

owen doesn’t answer.  runs to the dining room and quickly picks up the wrapper that was on the floor and tries to hide it.

me “owen, where is it?”

owen still refuses to answer, but stands next to the drawer behind the table and is pointing to it.  i open it and there it is.  i pick it up and without saying a word put it in the trash.  i wish i could have taken a picture of owen’s face.  it was shock, disbelief, amazement, sadness all in one. he didn’t even cry immediately all he could do is say:

owen “what can i do? what can i do?”

owen walked into his room and sat on his bed.  he gave himself a time out.  i came out later and explained how, i was very disappointed in him because he lied to me.  he felt terrible.  i felt bad for him in a way, he didn’t even know what a “lie” was.  i had to explain it to him.

riding trikes

riding trikes

so the day after i wrote how owen never rides his tricycle, he suddenly wanted to ride his tricycle, after of course, he rode his scooter.  his scooter is still his number one choice, he rode it all the way to dinner and back tonight which is 1.2 miles each way, pretty good for a little guy.  owen still doesn’t show any interest in his glider bike.  i brought it out for him but he wasn’t into it.  i’m debating on getting dylan a glider bike, he tried owen’s but it was too big for him.  i’d like too but have a feeling it would just collect dust until owen decided he was going to start riding his. (i’m hoping by just putting it out there, in the cosmic world of never say never, owen will ride his glider bike.  but i probably just negated that by writing this bit)

update HE RODE HIS GLIDER BIKE TODAY!  actually he rode his scooter, then his tricycle, then his bicycle and then back to his scooter.  i can tell already that when he decides to ride it more frequently he’ll get it right away.  he was able to pick up his feet a a few times already and glide. yeah!
